About Earthshot

Trinity MAT Earthshot was launched, by our pupils, to over 700 staff on the 28 February 2022. The inspiration for this initiative came from President John F. Kennedy’s famous Moonshot speech and the Earthshot Prize Giving event, headed by HRH Prince William.

Since opening our first school in 2010, we have supported thousands of young people to achieve their potential both academically and socially, and we are proud of their many individual achievements. We have also educated our young people to understand what it means to be a responsible citizen and how they can play a vital part in shaping the future. As we look to the next decade, our Trust, which is now made up of more than ten academies, with over 6,000 pupils ranging from nursery through to post-16, has committed to a decade of action to repair our planet.

As Sir David Attenborough said: “If working apart, we are a force powerful enough to destabilise our planet, surely working together, we are powerful enough to save it.”

“Our planet is in crisis. Our pupils and staff understand this so we are standing up, speaking out and committed to making a difference.”

Pledges

During the launch of TMAT Earthshot, staff were asked to vote for five Trust-wide Earthshot Pledges that we will prioritise, invest in and deliver by the end of the decade. You can take a look at each of our pledges and what our staff and Eco-Committee Members are doing to action these changes within each of our academies.View our pledges!

Ensure all school waste is reused or recycled
Achieve green flag accreditation and plant 52 trees
Remove all single use plastic
Incentivise staff to buy electric vehicles
Decrease the number of staff and pupils opting for meat dishes

Eco-Committees

Each of our Trinity MAT academies has comprised its own Eco-Committee that will plan and implement environmental projects in their school, local community and beyond. Members will also have the opportunity to meet with committees from all academies across the Trust at our termly Earthshot Conferences and Annual Earthshot Prize-Giving Event. Each Committee was formed following a selective interview process to create a well-rounded and inspired team who are ready to develop a more sustainable future. Our committees consist of pupils from Years 1 to 13 and are spread across five local authorities, working collaboratively to help repair our planet over the next decade.

Events

We hold regular events that allow for our Trinity MAT staff and Eco-Committees to collaborate, influence, and action change. Our termly events are pivotal to the change we’re making across our academies as they allow us to share ideas, inspire and inform. These events include a range of activities from student performances, guest speakers, workshops, announcements and an opportunity for our Eco-Committee members to speak about the change their actioning in their academy. We also host an annual Earthshot Prize-Giving Event that will see each committee working to win the prize fund for their academy.

The Inspiration

Trinity MAT Earthshot is inspired by John F Kennedy’s famous Moonshot speech and the BBC Earthshot series headed by HRH Prince William. Since Trinity Academy Halifax opened in 2010, we have supported thousands of young people to achieve their potential both academically and socially, and we are proud of their many individual achievements. We have also educated our young people to understand what it means to be a responsible citizen and how they can shape the future. As we look to the next decade, our Trust, which is now made up of ten academies, with over 1000 staff and 6,000 students ranging from nursery through to post-16, has committed to a decade of action to repair our planet. We will empower our pupils and staff with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and tackle the catastrophic effects of climate change.
